Offre Joie: Empowering Communities Through Volunteering

Offre Joie” is a volunteer-driven organization that has been working relentlessly to rebuild the physical environment and the social fabric of Lebanon. Founded in 1985 during the civil war, ‘Offre Joie’ was born out of a mission to bridge the gap between communities torn apart by conflict.

The Power of Volunteers: A Unique Approach to Relief

One of the key aspects that sets ‘Offre Joie’ apart from other organizations is its focus on voluntary service. Following the Beirut explosion, it mobilized 6,000 individuals from 17 countries, to rebuild the city, transforming what was once a place of destruction into a symbol of hope, solidarity, and resilience.

We have the privilege of seeing firsthand how the power of youth and collective action can turn a disaster into a space to rebuild,” says Marc Torbey, the president of the organization. “Our volunteers are more than just aid workers—they’re catalysts for change.”

One of the most remarkable projects that ‘Offre Joie’ has undertaken since the beginning of the Israeli attacks on Lebanon in September 2024 is ‘Operation Flora’. This operation included the transformation of a vacant government-owned land in Karantina, into a space to house the displaced community. Within just 8 days, volunteers managed to clear 600 truckloads of debris, preparing the space for the installation of a guesthouse that would offer shelter to those displaced by the disaster.

A large portion of displaced people who were in the Manara and Ramlit el Bayda areas were relocated to this lot,” says Marc. “It is this sense of human connection at the core of our mission.”

Additionally, the organization has been able to carry out massive projects, such as the rehabilitation of four shelters housing displaced communities, the restoration of damaged buildings, and providing material support to over 1,000 people.

The Importance of Human Connection in Crisis Recovery

While material aid is essential, Torbey believes that human presence and engagement are what truly make a difference in the recovery process. “Some people may have a roof over their heads now, but what they need most is human contact,” he emphasizes.  “These people have gone through the unthinkable. They need someone to hear their stories, to hold their hand. That human connection is just as important as any material help we can offer.”

“Offre Joie” is dedicated to continuing to offer emotional support, especially for those who are struggling with trauma, and to being an active pillar of the rebuilding efforts. “Hopefully, people will return to their villages, but they will still need help rebuilding their lives. This is where we come in—we will be there to help them get back on their feet.

Inclusion: Breaking Down Barriers for People with Special Needs

Marc’s personal journey has also influenced Offre Joie’s approach to inclusion.   Eight years ago, Marc was involved in a diving accident that left him tetraplegic. Despite the physical challenges he faces, he has found peace in the work he does and believes that people with disabilities can make a huge impact on their communities.

“I have learned from my personal experience that people with special needs are incredibly resilient and capable,” Marc says. “They have unique talents and gifts. They can be a huge asset to society, and that is something we should never forget.”

He encourages people with disabilities to volunteer and take an active role in rebuilding Lebanon, noting that sometimes the smallest gestures—a smile, a helping hand—can make a world of difference. “It is about creating a society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can contribute without fear.”

He adds by noting that the attitude that some people might have towards the disabled community can often be hurtful, or awkward – with people not knowing what to say. ‘It is simple, just smile’.

Join the Movement: Be a Part of the Change

For Marc and his team, their mission is more than just a job—it is a moral obligation. “Every small action count,” Marc says. “If we all come together, we can rebuild Lebanon and create a brighter future for its people.”

The work of “Offre Joie” is far from over. Volunteers are still needed, and the organization welcomes anyone who wants to make a tangible difference – you can support them here.
