The inaugural conference series on re-imagining citizenship in the Arab world brought together researchers, scholars, civil society organizations, activists, and graduate students to discuss and explore innovative ideas and research on citizenship in the MENA region. This event focused on developing constructive ideas that fostered nation-building strategies contributing to unity and peace, promoting the concept of citizenship, and highlighting the role of citizenship education as a precursor to democratic and pluralist values. Additionally, it stressed the role and contribution of women in peace processes and nation-building.
Discussions were mindful of various critical issues, including the impact of decades of oppressive practices, the pervasive influence of patriarchy in all aspects of life, and the behavior of social institutions. Participants also addressed the endemic occurrence of armed conflict (both cross-border and internal), broken economies, frequent shocks such as pandemics and earthquakes, the rapid degradation of climate and natural resources, and the increasing forced migration within the region.
The event served as a space for unpacking the myriad relationships between citizens and their states in the Arab world. It provided meaningful and in-depth conversations on various aspects of citizenship, including political, social, economic, and cultural dimensions. Topics such as identity, nationalism, human rights, political involvement, social justice, and the role of civil society and its diverse ecosystem, as well as cultural diversity, were explored to shed light on the complex challenges surrounding citizenship in the region.
Furthermore, the series examined the role and importance of the state and policymakers in promoting citizenship and citizenship education. It aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the pertinent issues while identifying workable solutions and policy recommendations that can promote citizenship and strengthen social cohesion in the larger Arab region.
By providing a forum for presenting innovative ideas and best practices, this initiative sought to improve civic engagement and examine the opportunities and challenges associated with citizenship in the Arab world. It served as a platform for sharing knowledge, discussing creative ideas, and developing strategies that can lead to a more unified, peaceful, and democratic society.
