BEDNA Capacity Building Training: Advancing Human Rights and Activism in the Arab Region

The BEDNA Capacity Building Training, a joint initiative by the Asfari Institute and the Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND), is a week-long program aimed at empowering activists, human rights defenders, and civil society leaders across the Arab region, that took place from November 28 to December 2, 2022. The training provided participants with an in-depth understanding of the legal, political, and social dynamics that shape activism in the region. The program began with an introduction to human rights, the role of human rights defenders, and the security challenges they face. It then explored the legal and constitutional history of the Arab region, the political economy of the past decade, and the United Nations human rights system. Participants also delved into specialized topics such as LGBTQ+ activism, feminist journalism, ecofeminism, and the role of journalistic activism within civil society. The training concluded with sessions focused on activism within the diaspora, the theory of change, and the development of human rights advocacy campaigns. By the end of the week, participants are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively lead social movements and advocate for human rights throughout the Arab region.
