As we remember the innocent victims of August 4th, 2020, and as the drums of war are sounding louder in the MENA region, the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship at the American University of Beirut would like to commemorate this sad day and remember its innocent victims.
We focus on the intimate link between the absence of justice and the threat to citizenship, as per the op-ed of colleague and Founding Director of the Good Governance and Citizenship Observatory at the Asfari Institute, Dr. Simon Kachar.

في هذا المقال، يعبر الدكتور سيمون كشر عن خيبة أمله من الوضع السياسي في لبنان منذ إعلان “بيان العزوف” للرئيس فؤاد شهاب في عام 1970. يعتقد شهاب أن المؤسسات السياسية اللبنانية لم تعد صالحة للنهوض بالبلاد، مشيراً إلى أن النظام الاقتصادي والتشريعات لم تتطور بما يكفي لمواكبة التغيرات الحديثة. يرى كشر أن البيان لم يكن مجرد إعلان عن عدم الترشح، بل كان أيضاً إقراراً بفشل النظام في تحسين الوضع الوطني. يشير إلى أن الوضع لم يتغير بشكل إيجابي منذ ذلك الحين، ويعبر عن أسفه العميق لما وصل إليه لبنان، مستنكراً غياب المحاسبة والعدالة.
