On May 24th, 2023, the Annual Collaborative Program on Forced Migration, focusing on Syrian refugees in Lebanon, was held at the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship. The conference featured a welcome note from Dr. Fadlo Khuri, President of AUB, and a keynote speech by Roula El-Rifai from the International Development Research Centre. Opening remarks were provided by Dr. Fouad M. Fouad of AUB.
The conference featured three panels and closing remarks on Syrian refugees:
- Panel 1: Refugees from Syria in Host Countries
Moderated by Dr. Bashshar Haydar, this panel focused on the threats and vulnerabilities faced by Syrian refugees. Panelists discussed the harsh conditions, economic contributions, and local attitudes that worsen their situation, calling for better support systems. - Panel 2: Intersectional Vulnerabilities
Moderated by Joumana Merhi, this discussion addressed the unique challenges of women and marginalized groups among Syrian refugees. Key issues included gender-based violence and discrimination. Panelists advocated for targeted interventions to address these specific vulnerabilities. - Panel 3: Representation and Social Networks among Refugees
Moderated by Dr. Tania Haddad, this panel emphasized the need for refugee representation in decision-making and the role of social networks in resilience. Discussions highlighted the importance of integrating refugees into host communities.
Final and Closing Remarks
Dr. Aruna Rao, Dr. Lina Choueiri, and Lina Abou-Habib highlighted the need for ongoing research, collaboration, and advocacy to support Syrian refugees and ensure their safety and dignity.
